The European Commission considers media literacy as an important factor for active citizenship in today's information society.
The most often cited definition of media literacy is a succinct sentence hammered out by participants at the 1992 Aspen Media Literacy Leadership Institute: Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. (http://www.medialit.org/reading-room/what-media-literacy-definitionand-more/). The aim of media literacy is to increase people's awareness of the many forms of media messages encountered in their everyday lives. Media messages are the programmes, films, images, texts, sounds and websites that are carried by different forms of communication.

So, this is a course aimed at making the course participants more aware of the mechanism behind the ever-present media, more cautious about receiving and believing media messages, more knowledgeable media consumers and more skilled media creators. Hopefully by the end of the course participants will have enhanced their media critical thinking and become better equipped to deal with pressure and manipulation.
